The Santo Domingo Center of Excellence for Latin American Research at the British Museum is pleased to present Saa Ñu’ú / Clay Birds by Jorge Martínez Valderrama at the UK Mexican Arts Society Gallery.

Drawing inspiration from a symphony of sounds from nature, as well as using instruments that have been used for millennia, the artist has created a piece that transports the audience to a different reality.

The wind whispering in the needles of the cactus and the water running down the streams are just some of the elements that were recorded in the field, and that Martínez Valderrama has perfectly combined to offer an unparalleled experience of the Mixtec landscape “Ñuu Savi ( People of the Rain)” in the states of Oaxaca, Puebla and Guerrero (Mexico).

This work of art is the result of an artist residency at SD CELAR in the British Museum. For this project, Martínez Valderrama researched the Mesoamerican musical instruments and pictorial manuscripts in the collection and collaborated with the descendants of the indigenous communities that created them.
